Attention should be paid to sleep apnea disorders in the early years of life
'This is the strongest evidence so far to show that snoring, mouth breathing and sleep apnea can have social and emotional consequences for children,' said lead researcher Karen. Bonouck, Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health at Albert Einstein School of Medicine said.
'Parents and pediatricians should pay more attention to sleep disorders (SDB) in children right from the first year of life,' Professor Bonouck added.
SDB is a general term for sleep-related problems, mainly snoring (which is often accompanied by mouth breathing) and sleep apnea.
SDB is most common in children 2 - 6 years old, but also in younger children.
According to the American Institute of Otolaryngology and Ancient Surgery, about one in 10 children regularly snore and 2-4% suffer from sleep apnea. Common causes are abnormal or enlarged palate lymph nodes.
