Beautiful appearance overwhelms intelligence

A study in the US showed that most employers consider the appearance factors, not the intelligence or working capacity, when considering salary increase for employees.

Jason Fletcher, Yale University scientist (USA) conducted a survey of 4,000 people (both male and female) to find out the relationship between appearance and salary.

He assessed the attractiveness of volunteers by multiple scales and found that only more than half of the subjects had average appearance, 7% were " extremely attractive " and 8% were ranked. entered " extremely unattractive ". Volunteers also take IQ tests and provide information on wages and salary increases.

According to the Daily Mail , the results show that IQ does not have a big impact on salary as looks. For example, the average salary of people with high IQ is only 3 to 6% higher than the average IQ. Meanwhile, the average salary of people with average appearance is higher than the group with less attractive appearance from 5 to 10%.

In a paper published in Economics Letters, Fletcher said that if an average person wants to receive the same salary as a person with an attractive appearance for the same position, he (or her) must have an IQ 40% higher or higher. Thus, if the average salary of all volunteers is $ 25,000 per year, people with looks from the average become more than $ 2,500 per year (about $ 50 per week).

Fletcher has not explained the reason behind the phenomenon, but he thinks that appearance beauty increases confidence. Therefore, beautiful people are more confident when asking for a raise.
