Two zoologists Sarah Dzielski and Benjamin Van Doren of Cornell University (USA) have discovered strange things about sapayoa rainforest birds in Panama's Darien National Park.

Through genetic analysis, they found that their closest relatives were birds in the Asian and African oceans. This is extremely difficult to understand, since Sapayoa previously only resided in Central and South America. They have no habit of migrating, let alone flying to as far away as Asia or Africa.

One thing that astounded scientists was their social behavior. Sapayoa birds have a very different community life. Specifically, in a group they observed for many days there was a bird family consisting of a pair of adults, two other adult birds and two young birds. All four large birds went to feast on two small members.

Another strange thing discovered by scientists: The members of this bird family also have homosexual relationships .

"This is very strange. We believe that such behaviors appear in the evolution of sapayoa species to establish dominance and maintain social cohesion " - the research team said. .

Scientists claim to continue research to discover the secrets of the sapayoa bird as well as the special genetic and evolutionary information of the species.

The results of this study have just been published in the scientific journal The Auk (USA).
