A Boeing 777 Worliner jet took off from Hong Kong during a 23-hour flight to London (England) .

Boeing, which is in a fierce competition with rival Airbus on the lucrative long-haul aircraft market, said a 777-200LR plane on 9 November flew east instead of west across Russia as usual. Boeing said the flight started at 14.30 (GMT), scheduled to last 23 hours on a journey of more than 20,100km.

Lars Anderson, vice president of Boeing's 777 program, said: ' Boeing plans to make airline history. We set a new record for nonstop flights for commercial aircraft . ' Anderson said Wordliner could connect ' any two cities on earth '.

The aircraft uses General Electric's engine, taking off with a full fuel tank and carrying 35 people, including Boeing executives, journalists, some customers and crews.

The old record is also a commercial flight made by Boeing 747-400 aircraft in 1989. The plane flew 17,000km without a break from London (England) to Sydney (Australia).
