Breaking its own record, China continues to build the world's highest bridge above a 'crack in the Earth'

China's bridge not only benefits the local economy but also reshapes the standard of global engineering achievements.

On August 7, 2023,  Xinhua News Agency  published a series of photos of China constructing the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, a 2,980-meter-long structure that will span the Huajiang River in Guizhou Province, southwestern China.

With a vertical height of 625 meters from the bridge deck to the water, China's Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is expected to become the world's highest bridge upon completion in 2025. It will cut travel time across the canyon from about an hour to just 1 minute,  Xinhua  reported.

Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is built above  the grand canyon of the Huajiang River , which is known as the "Earth's crack".

Previously, in June 2023, the  Independent  (UK) reported that China's Beipanjiang Bridge (or Duge Bridge) is the highest bridge in the world, measuring 560 meters from the bridge deck to the water surface of the Beipan River. The Beipanjiang Bridge is a 1,341 meter long cable-stayed bridge, connecting Liupanshui (Guizhou Province) and Qujing (Yunnan Province), reducing travel time by up to 3 hours.

Beipanjiang Bridge has held the record as the world's highest bridge since 2016.

If the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is completed on schedule, it will break the record of the Beipanjiang Bridge to become the world's highest bridge.

It is known that the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge started construction nearly 2 years ago and is now half completed. The bridge is expected to be inaugurated in June 2025 .

The construction of the world's highest bridge has demonstrated China's relentless efforts to break records in construction and infrastructure development. The bridge not only benefits the local economy but also reshapes the standard of global engineering achievements.

A series of sightseeing and entertainment programs related to the bridge are being planned, according to a press conference held by the provincial government. The bridge is expected to become a major tourist magnet. Nearly half of the world's 100 highest bridges are currently built in Guizhou, a province nestled among high mountains.
