Can snoring people hear their own snoring?

Do people who snore in their sleep not hear their own snoring? Scientists have sought the answer .

Anyone who has ever been woken up by someone else snoring knows how loud and annoying snoring sounds can be, especially when the snoring person himself is still sleeping soundly.

So do snoring people themselves hear their own snoring , or do they have some ability that helps them "immune" to their own snoring ?

The interesting fact is that both of the above are true.

According to professor and doctor Anita Shelgikar at the University of Michigan, snoring people do not know they are snoring regardless of the intensity and frequency of snoring. That's because each person has a different threshold for stimulation , or the tendency to be awakened while sleeping. Depending on the individual, some types or levels of noise are more likely to cause discomfort than others.

But a person can also wake up from his own snoring, which also varies from night to night. The effect of noise on sleep depends on many factors such as noise intensity, type of noise, each person's threshold and other environmental factors. For some people, whispering or soft music can still disrupt their sleep.

There is another factor that affects whether snoring people know they are snoring or not : REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep).

Some studies show that people's threshold for waking up in REM sleep is lower than in NREM sleep (non-rapid eye movement sleep). Many people snore louder and more frequently during REM sleep. That's why some people can hear and be awakened by their own snoring during REM sleep.

Some recent research shows that there is a method called "phasic acoustic stimulation". This is an audio streaming protocol to increase the amount of slow-wave sleep, also known as the deep sleep phase.

Snoring occurs when air cannot flow easily through the nose and mouth.

A person who snores occasionally has nothing to worry about, except that it is a bit noisy and may disturb others. However, people who snore due to certain causes such as sleep apnea are at increased risk of stroke or heart attack.

Therefore, monitoring sleep and snoring levels is also necessary, especially in the elderly.
