Car smoke reduces intelligence

Exposure to emissions from vehicles can slow the learning ability of elementary school children, according to a new study.

The research team from the Center for Environmental Epidemiology Research in Barcelona, Spain, conducted an investigation at 39 primary schools. 2,700 children aged 7-9 are monitored to assess their ability to remember and focus.

After 12 months, scientists found that children who were educated in a healthy environment progressed much faster than those from schools located in polluted places. In areas where high levels of nitrogen dioxide and microscopic dust particles are found, which are emissions from cars, the child's ability to remember only increased by 7.4%. For children who study in less polluted places, this rate is 11.5%.
'The findings indicate that children's brain development can be easily compromised by air pollution caused by transport,' the researchers warn.
Previously, scientists also warned that exposure to air pollution from the womb increased the risk of low birth weight or later autism.
