The SS Central America, carrying 13.6 tons of gold in distress on September 12, 1857, was engulfed in the storm. The "gold carrier" sank below the sea about 260km from South Carolina. In 1988, the wreck position was determined, leading to efforts to salvage the treasure on the water. However, only 5% of the value of this golden treasure was unearthed.

According to Live Science, the Odyssey is a licensed US ocean exploration company that continues to excavate the area this year. In the first search in April, the divers took five gold bars and two gold coins from the wreck. So far they have collected more than 15,500 gold and silver coins and 45 gold bars.

To serve the treasure excavation task, the Odyssey conducted high-resolution survey video at the sinking position, assessed the data and repaired the Odyssey Explorer rescue ship. In that area, they simultaneously discovered many precious jewelry, gold ore; objects from the 19th century such as glass jars, chewing tobacco; some personal items such as perfume bottles, gold pendants, gold-plated bracelets .

Under the agreement, Odyssey received 80% of the value of artifacts obtained from the SS Central America. Subtracting the fees for the financial aid unit, the remaining Odyssey 45%.

The SS Central America cruise from New York to San Francisco was used during the period of the "California gold rush" at the time. At the time of the sinking, the ship carried many gold ingots and Double Eagle gold coins. The shipwreck caused many American banks to struggle, dragging the crisis in 1857 and the three-year economic recession.

The ship carries 571 passengers and crew. The rescue effort in the typhoon failed, killing 425 people.
