Discover new 9m tall dinosaur and have a super big nose
After a series of published discoveries about many ancient animals, archaeologists have found a new dinosaur named Rhinorex condrupus with a giant nose.
The dinosaur fossils mentioned above were excavated at the Cliffs area of Book, Utah, USA since 1992. However, until recently, these fossils have only been analyzed by two scientists. Terry Gates of North Carolina State University, and Rodney Scheetz of Brigham Young University, USA.
They named the newly discovered dinosaur Rhinorex. It is said to live in the ancient swamp area of Utah today about 75 million years ago. Rhinorex belongs to the duck beak family, like the 9m tall Gryposaurus and Rhinorex and weighs nearly 4 tons and has an extremely large nose.
The two scientists analyzed a number of specimens such as skulls, part of the skeleton covered by sandstone and fossil skin texture.
'If the dinosaurs are like their relatives, then they probably don't have a sense of smell , ' said researcher Terry Gates, 'but the nose may have been used as a vehicle. attracting partners, identifying individuals of the same species, or even just beating plants. We have started to find clues to solve this mystery. "
The Rhinorex's large nose itself is not a major concern for scientists, but what is important is what it can reveal about different dinosaur families, and about the evolution in general. Gates and Scheetz are still unsure whether Rhinorex will live with Gryposaurus at the same time. The Rhinorex fossils show that the habitat of this species is an estuary area, while the Gryposaurus species live in higher altitudes.
The diversity of ancient living environment is very impressive. Fossils found in Utah could reveal some important links between dinosaurs that once lived in the area. The terrain has affected the development of some dinosaurs.
So is Gryposaurus and Rhinorex in the same era? This is entirely possible. However, the distance of nearly 250km between the habitat of two species is not large. Another theory is that the Rhinorex is a mutant Gryposaurus in the process of moving toward the sea.
However, two paleontologists have yet to give any clear explanation for this dinosaur's strange nose. But if the Rhinorex is exactly the mutant Gryposaurus, it will be descended from Gryposaurus, and will be related to the later Kritosaurus.
