Cars 'swim' in the wild flood in Turkey
The water rises more than a meter in the Lkitelli district (Istanbul), the car drivers have to climb the roof of the car waiting for rescue. The number of deaths due to unexpected floods after the record heavy rains in the past 80 years in the city of Istanbul has reached 20 people.
City official Muammer Guler said 20 people had died and more than 20 were injured, many missing when the city was submerged in water. According to him, rain will continue throughout the week, and the authorities have taken necessary precautions.
Istanbul rescuers found seven bodies in a car park in Ikitelli district. Seven other bodies were discovered outside a textile factory in Halkali district.
Heavy rain caused two streams in Istanbul to become flooded streams, flooding dozens of houses, as well as workplaces. A building collapsed but no casualties were reported.
Hikmet Cakmak, Istanbul vice governor, described the scene at Ikitelli as a " disaster ". Four helicopters and eight motorboats were mobilized to rescue stranded drivers.
Meteorologists say heavy rains in Istanbul's Catalca suburb - where two people died yesterday were the worst in 80 years. Six others were swept away in Saray, in Tekirdag province.
