China built the world's largest air filter tower

China built more than 91 meters in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, to deal with the problem of heavy air pollution. The giant filter tower operators claim it is the "world's largest air filter tower" , the International Business Times reported yesterday.

In winter, Xi'an city residents suffer from severe pollution, as the city's heating system is heavily dependent on coal. Researchers at the Earth Environment Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are testing air purification towers. More than a dozen pollution monitoring stations were set up to check the effectiveness of the filter tower in Xi'an.

The team reports a massive air purification tower that produces more than 10 million cubic meters of clean air every day. According to Cao Junji, the project leader, the air quality is improved in the area of 10km 2 . "The filter tower has no peer version in size. The test results are quite satisfactory , " Cao said.

High also shared a filter tower that successfully reduced haze to moderate levels over several days when air pollution was extremely high. The base of the tower covers an area half the size of a football field, including many greenhouses. These greenhouses smoke polluted air, then heat the polluted air with solar energy. Hot air flies up and passes through many clean layers before crossing the tower.

According to High, the filter tower uses very little electricity, mainly thanks to operation."It hardly requires any power during the day. The design works very well while running the test , " said the researcher.

The air purification tower in Xi'an is a miniature version of the larger haze filters that Chinese scientists plan to build in other cities across the country in the future. As described in the research team's patent application in 2014, the standard-sized haze filter will be 488 meters tall and have a diameter of 198 meters.
