Car owners sign a commitment not to use the car on the day of the campaign
In mid-May 2006, in Beijing, 200,000 members of 112 car ownership clubs launched the " one day without car " movement to reduce pollution in the city.
According to the members, on this day they will not use cars and hope Beijing can get at least one day of " clear blue sky ".
Du Shaozhong, deputy director of Beijing's Environmental Protection Department, decided to support the movement with practical action: although his distance from home to work was 6 km, he still walked to work and vice versa.
The "Carless Day " movement was initiated by the people to improve air quality in Beijing and further enhance the awareness of environmental respect among the people.
Mr. Du said that it is impossible to impose " no car days " on the entire population but with this movement, raising people's awareness of urban pollution will be more effective.
In China, Chengdu - the provincial capital of Sichuan is the first city to implement the " one day without a car " movement. As expected, the Chinese government will officially launch " day without cars " when conditions permit.
