China launches the new weather forecast satellite

China may launch Fengyun-3 (Feng Yun-3 or FY-3) weather forecast satellite this fall to improve its global weather forecast.

Researched and produced by the Shanghai Space Agency, it is China's second-generation weather tracking satellite.

Gao Huoshan, FY-3 satellite research project director, said that FY-3 weighs more than 2.4 tons, three times higher than FY-1 satellites. In addition, the FY-3 is equipped with 11 observation devices with much greater sensitivity than the FY-1 generation.

Gao said the new satellite could more accurately detect meteorological changes and send higher resolution images. Once launched into space, the FY-3 satellite will significantly support weather forecasting and prevention of natural disasters, replacing the FY-1D satellite used since May 2002. and bow with FY-2D satellite forming a dual observation system.

Previously, China Meteorological Agency announced that by 2020, China will launch a total of 22 weather forecast satellites including: 4 Fengyun-2 satellites; 12 Fengyun-3 satellites and 6 Fengyun-4 satellites.
