Light brown in cola soft drink products is usually made from melted sugar or ammonia chemical (NH3). However, scientists at the US Center for Community Health Science (CSPI) warn, colorants with ammonia can cause many different types of cancer.
According to the Telegraph newspaper, the recommendation was made by scientists after conducting experiments on animals. The CSPI team also petitioned the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban food colors that contain ammonia in all cola beverages.
The team explained that NH3 will react with sugar in cola beverage products, forming carcinogens. In addition, they warned that cola drinking water increased the risk of obesity.
However, the American Beverage Association has rejected the CSPI scientists' warning because there is no evidence that food coloring contains NH3 causing cancer in humans.
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola, the largest producer of cola in the world, insists that its colorings do not contain carcinogens as warnings from CSPI and claim that NH3. Only the reaction produces cancer during cooking. Pepsi also made similar complaints about CSPI warning.
