Cotton food
If American scientists' research is successful, there will be a new food that provides millions of people. These are genetically modified cottonseed.
Normally cottonseed contains a lot of protein, but unfortunately, this plant also produces a poison called gossypol (harmful to the liver and human heart) mixed in cotton seeds. So cottonseed can only be used as food for animals whose stomach has 4 compartments because they can destroy toxins.
Now, a team of scientists at Texas A&M University led by Keerti Rathore is looking to reduce the amount of gossypol in cottonseed when impacting on the diving genes in it.
According to the Daily Mail, genetically modified cotton seeds with gossypol content are not harmful enough to humans. It is expected that a new decade of cottonseed will be used as food. Scientists estimate that with the current cotton growing area around the world, the extracted protein will be enough to supply 500 million people.
