Crocodile is promoted to the rank of ambassador

Bio Park Zoo in Italy awards the title " Environmental Ambassador " for a Cuban crocodile.

The ceremony of " ordination " of ambassadors for crocodiles took place quite frantically at Bio Park zoo, Rome city, Italy on March 14 with the participation of many teenagers. Mr. Paolo Giuntarelli, director of Bio Park zoo, declared the Cuban crocodile officially became the environmental ambassador. ' Environmental ambassador ' - a 60 cm body length - was captured by an Italian during a visit to Cuba. The man then hid it in a suitcase to take to Italy in 2011. However, the customs officers confiscated it and took it to the Bio Park zoo.

In January, the crocodile was taken to the Vatican to "meet" Pope Benedict XVI, who emphasized the importance of protecting nature. Pope Benedict XVI will leave the Holy See on March 26 to visit Cuba and Mexico. The Cuban crocodile will be a member of the Pope's delegation.

' The return of the Cuban crocodile's homeland will be a symbolic act. It shows that people should stop sabotaging nature, 'said Giuntarelli.

Cuban crocodile is listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Their number decreased by 80% compared to the previous time. Today they are only distributed in a small area in Cuba.

' I hope the crocodile's repatriation will go smoothly and the Cuban people will warmly welcome it ,' said the archbishop Giovanni Becciu, the former diplomatic representative of the Holy See in Cuba. Mr. Becciu also participated in the ceremony to honor the ambassador for the crocodile.
