Cuba is proving its great potential in developing renewable energy to meet the country's electricity needs, while saving costs.

On August 19, this Caribbean island nation commissioned a second solar park.

Located in the central city of Santa Clara, 280km east of Havana, the park is designed with 5,200 solar panels, capable of providing 962kW / day for 750 households.

The solar park, along with the park inaugurated earlier in the province of Cienfuegos, has been connected to the national electricity network.

According to Cuban experts, the operation of a solar park in Santa Clara City will help Cuba save about 380 tons of oil each year, thereby gradually reducing the dependence on biofuels which is quite expensive in this country.

Cuba aims to increase the share of electricity consumption from renewable energy such as hydropower, biofuels and wind energy to 10% by 2030, compared with only 4% currently.

With its favorable geographical location, year-round sunshine, Cuba's solar radiation is enough to provide 1,800 times more electricity than the total oil used in industry and people's lives.
