The deputy director of the Cigar Research Institute, Dr. Norma del Castillo, said Cuba has successfully conducted high-quality protein preparations from fresh cigars.

High quality protein prepared to meet the technical standards provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for patients with kidney disease.

Dr. Del Castillo said the Cigar Research Institute collaborated with the Department of Biology at the Jose Antonio Echeveria Polytechnic Institute in Havana and the Pharmacy Center, to conduct the experiments.

Also according to Dr. Del Castillo, the Cigar Research Institute is conducting the first phase to study the preparation of Solanesol, a pharmaceutical product to produce Coenzima Q10 medicine to treat cancer diseases.
