Vietnam successfully bred two high quality rice varieties

The Mekong Delta Rice Institute has just successfully bred two high quality rice varieties, reaching the export standard of OM 7347 and OM 6600.

OM 7347 rice variety is a newly approved pure rice variety recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as a national variety, tested in comparison with yield from the winter-spring crop of 2008-2009.

The testing network was carried out on a large scale at the Rice Institute, Extension Centers, Seed Centers of 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta, 5 provinces in the East and 7 provinces in the Central Region.

OM 7347 rice variety

The results showed that OM 7347 has a growth time of 95-105 days, height of 100-110cm trees, high number of cotton / m ² (350-380 cotton), low seed / cotton ratio (9.9 %), heavy grain (weight 1,000 grains 26 -27g), beautiful rice grain, elongated (6.92mm), low amylose content (16.8%), flexible rice, delicious, very high protein content ( 8.9%).

In addition to good qualities, varieties also possess high yield characteristics (6-8 tons / ha / crop) and have good resistance to pests such as brown backed rice plant hopper (level 3) and rice blast disease (level 3-5) and leaf blight (level 3), stunted and dry yellow disease. This is a very good variety of rice to give a large area and supplement to the key breeding structure for provinces such as Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, An Giang, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh.

OM6600 rice variety is also a pure rice variety, recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as a national variety. The OM6600 variety planted in the Mekong Delta trial from the winter-spring season 2005-2006 has so far been 20,000 ha.

This variety has a lot of advantages such as very good tillering, beautiful shape, cotton bunches, not flat, high yield, sticky rice, fragrant, resistant to brown plant hopper, yellow dwarf disease, twisted twisted dwarf, yield from 6 -8 tons / ha, likely to grow well in most Mekong Delta provinces. This is a very good variety to provide a wide area and supplement the breeding structure for the provinces in this region.
