After that, the patient was transferred to the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital in a deep coma, 4-point glasgow, hypotension, tests with severe metabolic acidosis, brain scans with hyacinth lesions and cerebral edema.

Blood tests showed that the concentration of industrial methanol alcohol was 491.79 mg / dL (nearly 25 times higher than the concentration causing poisoning), the concentration of ethanol was negative.

Patients were treated for detox, dialysis, resuscitation. The intoxication has ceased but deep coma due to brain damage.

Examination of the remaining solution in the bottle of alcohol that the patient drank showed that the concentration of industrial methanol accounted for 81.88%, the ethanol concentration was 1.01%.

Dr. Nguyen said that in the past few years, the situation of methanol poisoning has tended to increase. In addition to the reason that people drink alcohol of unknown origin, there is a situation of drinking alcohol instead of alcohol (due to alcoholism, lack of alcohol to drink or misunderstanding medical alcohol as safe).

As noted by the Poison Control Center, most cases of medical alcohol lead to severe methanol poisoning, many patients died.

Dr. Nguyen emphasized that methanol is not mentioned about antiseptic effect. At the same time, the content of ethanol in an antiseptic alcohol bottle that is either unsatisfactory or not will lead to the inability to kill germs, unable to protect patients from the risk of disease, postoperative infections, wounds and infusions. .
