At that time, engineer Neil Papworth , an employee of Sema Group in the UK, was a member of the team that developed messaging software for Vodafone. He and his colleagues used a personal computer to compose messages before sending them because the cell phone at that time did not have a keyboard. This message contains "Merry Christmas" and it was sent to Richard Jarvis, technical director of Sema Group at the time.

After receiving the message via Orbitel 901 , Richard Jarvis was surprised and immediately called the headquarters saying he would return to London to work immediately even though it was right at the time. He attended a party of friends at Newbury, Berkshire. Although he is widely regarded and recognized as the "father" of SMS, Neil Papworth insists that he only fulfills his duty to serve customers.

Although it has earned a few fame after its appearance, SMS still has to wait for a long time before it can really " launch a movie ". Even until 1995, each user only sent 1 to 2 messages a month. One of the reasons is that the number of mobile phone users at that time was still very limited. Having to enter the 21st century, new SMS proved to be an unexpectedly explosive development when in 2000 alone, an average of 17 billion messages were sent in a year, and this number was up to 20 times in just 2 years.

Today, SMS has become popular and widely used around the world with over 4 billion people using SMS to communicate with each other. On average, 7 trillion messages are sent each year to more than 200,000 messages sent every second around the world. Many people have questioned whether there will be anything to overthrow the dominance of SMS within 20 years, let us wait and see.
