Detection of giant dinosaur fossils in Argentina

Argentine scientists have discovered fossils of a foot-lizard, Notocolossus lizard, with the height of the leg bone as long as 1.76m and belonging to the tyrant lizard family.

Bernardo González Riga, the research project director, said this is a very different dinosaur compared to the species once discovered in the world.

This fossil was found in the province of Mendoza, 1,100km southwest of Buenos Aires.

According to Mr. Riga, at first, they discovered the tail of this giant dinosaur. Later, during the excavation process, the team found the foot and leg bone as large as a tree trunk. He said this was a very special discovery, but now they have not found the skull of this dinosaur.

Scientists say the Notocolossus species is 25-28m long and 9 to 13 times heavier than an adult elephant.

86 million years ago, the Andes was not yet formed, at which time the whole area where this lizard foot dinosaur was discovered was pine forests, with many flowering plants. Many herbivorous dinosaurs with very long necks, along with carnivorous dinosaurs, crocodiles and freshwater turtles live here.

The discovery of fossil lizard foot dinosaurs can help scientists understand the leg bone structure that can help dinosaurs carry on themselves such a huge body mass.

So far, there is not much information about the dinosaur lizard family.

Scientists have only discovered 60 animals, most of them in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Argentina. Compared to the fossil found, this fossil is new.

Argentina is dubbed the graveyard of dinosaurs.
