Diabetic patients are at increased risk of cancer

A recent study by US scientists confirmed that people with diabetes are more likely to get cancer than others.

Based on the data of a survey through a direct phone system with nearly 400,000 adult-age people, the researchers found that among 100 male patients with diabetes, There were 16 people with cancer, and among 100 female patients, 17 had cancer.

Meanwhile, only 7 out of every 100 men (without diabetes) are diagnosed with cancer and this figure for women is 10.

Dr Chaoyang Li of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the results of the study did not surprise scientists.

After calculating other factors such as age, drinking habits, smoking, the researchers concluded: the risk of cancer in diabetic patients (including men and women) is 10%. Dr. Li said that there have been many studies that have previously demonstrated a link between the two diseases.

The results of the study also indicate: Men with diabetes are more likely to have colon, pancreatic, rectal, bladder, kidney or prostate cancer. Meanwhile, women with diabetes are more likely to develop breast cancer, leukemia or uterine cancer.

However, this is just a quick study, not tracking patients for a long time. Professor Fred Brancati of Johns Hopkins University, who did not participate in the study, said he was surprised by the new findings, because some cancers quickly kill people. That means they will not be in the study.

Previously, he also conducted a study that showed that the risk of death from cancer in diabetics is 40% higher than in others.

According to Dr. Li, researchers have yet to determine why diabetes and cancer are related. The cause may be due to high blood sugar or blood insulin levels exceeding the permitted level, however, this is just a guess and has not been proven.

According to him, the results of this study play an important role in preventing cancer risk in diabetics, while encouraging everyone to practice a healthy lifestyle (control body weight, no smoking .) to reduce the risk of getting both of these dangerous diseases.
