Leading the research group, Diego Espinoza-Peralta said they conducted a meta-analysis of seven studies including 3,400 subjects. The results showed that the risk of cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes who use metformin is relatively low, only about 38%. The most obvious is the reduction in the risk of bowel and breast cancer, but it does not have a clear change in pancreatic cancer.

Among patients with type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer are the three most at risk of developing cancer.

Diego Espinoza-Peralta explained that metformin reduces the risk of cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes because it can regulate an enzyme activity that helps inhibit cell growth.

Metformin is a medicine that is considered safe for long-term use. Previous studies have shown that the drug may inhibit tumor growth in the lungs and breast, reducing the risk of breast cancer in people with type 2 diabetes.
