Discover an ancient gym in Egypt

A group of German and Egyptian experts discovered an ancient gym at Watfa, in Fayoum province, south of Cairo.

New vestiges of the gym were discovered.

The Egyptian Archeology Department on November 6 said a group of German and Egyptian experts, led by German archaeologist Cornelia Roemer of the German Archaeological Research Institute, discovered an ancient site at Watfa, in Fayoum province. , south of Cairo. This is the rest of the first gymnasium of ancient Greeks found in Egypt.

The above-mentioned Greek-style gym has a large hall for meetings, a dining room, a courtyard in the middle of the building, and an outdoor track nearly 200 meters long.

Archaeologist Roemer said Watfa's practice room is clear evidence of the impact of Greek life in Egypt, not only in Alexandria but also in rural areas.

According to Ms. Roemer, the gym used to be the private property of the rich, who even wanted their villages to be more Greek-style.

The German Archaeological Institute conducted exploration and excavation at Watfa since 2010.
