Giant dinosaurs were found when scientists discovered seven fossil vertebrae trapped in a cliff dating back 130 million years. It was later discovered on the banks of the Volga River near Ulyanovsk in 1982.

Vladimir Efimov said he found the first three giant vertebrae after they fell off the cliff in the early 80s. Several years later, many of the limestone cliffs broke off with the remaining vertebrae.

Efimov had a short report announcing this discovery in 1997. In Efimov's description of the discovery, it was the giant vertebrae of an unclassified dinosaur.

This new finding in Russia shows that long-necked dinosaur families are more widely distributed in Early Cretaceous and some of their important evolutionary stages may have occurred in Eastern Europe and Asia.
