This new, unnamed scallop species is a giant scallop shellfish , discovered in the area near the Ningaloo Reef, in Western Australia.
Shane Penny, a researcher at Charles Darwin University said that through the exchange of cell samples, the Australian scientists discovered this species.
Previously, they thought this species was similar to the known Tridacna squanosa.
Scientists claim that this finding will diversify the number of oyster species in Australia, but also force managers to pay more attention to preserving the diversity of these species.
Giant oysters are highly valuable in trade and have become the target of poachers in recent years.
