Discovered more than 200 years old mummy in Dong Nai

Representative of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Nai province said, implementing the direction of the provincial People's Committee and the organization of the excavation of Cau Xeo ancient tomb in Group 23, Cau Xeo area, Long Thanh town , Long Thanh district (Dong Nai) to clear the ground for construction of Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay highway, thereby discovering mummies with a date of over 200 years.

By the end of September 16, the excavation was basically completed with the entire section of the tomb construction and the coffin, including the mummy of preservation at the Provincial Museum.

The excavation team was led by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Duc Manh, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (National University of Ho Chi Minh City) and ancient grave researcher Do Dinh Truat.

The initial excavation results showed that Cau Xeo ancient tomb has a closed and rectangular architecture. If including the walls, graves are about 8.5m long, 4.5-4.6m wide. Tombs are made in outer areas including: the compound surrounds 6 faces (both the bottom and the lid) is about 50cm thick, the inside is wooden and the same is the coffin with a semicircle lid, above it covered fabric with wire pattern, leaf and chrysanthemum pattern. When opening the lid of the coffin, it was discovered that the mummy was covered with cloth and covered with lotus leaves.

According to an expert studying the ancient tomb, Do Dinh Truat, when exploring at the head of the mummy, the body inside was preserved very well. According to archaeologists, based on the external information and the mummy inside the coffin may confirm that the coffin is a grandmother, or perhaps a lady who is closely attached to the Nguyen Dynasty.

Cau Xeo ancient tomb is particularly important because in addition to the unique art architecture, this is the first time Dong Nai archeology has discovered mummies with the age of over 200 years, promising to explain many problems to study. saving history and culture, and exploring the land of Bien Hoa-Dong Nai.

In the coming days, the Archaeological Delegation will coordinate with experts from Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy to handle mummies and continue research.
