Cambodian scientists said yesterday they have just discovered a rare small-vulture vulture found only in Southeast Asia and in danger of extinction in Stung Treng province.
'We found this bird nest on a hill, where two other vultures were also found,' said Song Chansocheat, director of the Cambodian government's vulture conservation project. The project is supported by the World Conservation Organization, International Bird Organization, World Wildlife Conservation Fund, Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund and Royal Bird Protection Association.
In addition to small-sized vultures, scientists also discovered red-headed vultures, giant storks and a threatened primate species known as douc langurs.
According to the World Conservation Association (WCS), this precious vulture species is also home to many other animals that are on the WCS list of highly endangered species.

Researchers say small-sized vultures have been found in other parts of Southeast Asia, but it is the only other known so far in northern India. They are thought to be extinct in many parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand.
Immediately after the discovery of the bird, Song's team came up with measures to prevent hunting and poaching eggs and is working with local authorities to ensure that the birds are being treated with measures longer-term conservation measures.
