Fossil bones of Yakutsk elephants.
Parts of fossil bones found, including about 2.4 meters long ivory, skull and leg bones, belong to a mature Colombian elephant. The animal, shaped like this elephant, lived in the end of the Pleistocene (also known as the Neolithic), about 1.8 million to 10,000 years ago, moving to what is now America and beyond. down south in Nicaragua and Honduras.
Paleontologists at the San Diego Natural History Museum estimate that these fossil bones are dated to about 500,000 years old.
Paleontologist Pat Sena said that this is really an interesting and important discovery, since it is rarely discovered that the fossil of the mammoth elephant with the skull, leg bones and an ivory is almost still intact.
