National Geographic reported, in a recent survey in Selva de Florencia National Park in Colombia, scientists from the American Wildlife Conservation Association (WCS) discovered brown spider monkeys (A hybridus brunneus).
Nestor Roncancio, a member of the team, said that he and his colleagues estimated nearly 30 brown spider monkeys living on an area of one kilometer square. The expert team did not detect any other spider spider subspecies in the Selva de Florencia national park.

The number of brown spider monkeys in the north of South America has decreased by at least 80% over the past 45 years due to hunting and narrowing of habitat. So the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) puts them on the list of species that are going to be extinct.
'We are surprised because people do not think brown spider monkeys will show up on a short trip and on an area with rugged terrain. Our emotions rise when we see them , 'said Roncancio.
Roncancio and his colleagues are developing a conservation plan to protect the brown spider monkeys in their habitat.
