Dong Van stone plateau becomes a world geopark

UNESCO Office yesterday announced Dong Van Stone Park became a member of the Global Geopark Network (GGN).

With this event, Dong Van Stone Plateau became the first geopark of Vietnam, and the second park in Southeast Asia recognized by GGN.

Dong Van stone plateau covers an area of ​​2,350 km2, including Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac districts with an average altitude of 1400-1600 m. Here, scientists discovered 45 geomorphological heritage, 33 tectonic heritage and many fossils in sedimentary rocks.

Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son, Chairman of the National Committee of UNESCO Vietnam, said the event of Dong Van Stone Plateau joining GGN will be a good opportunity for Ha Giang to promote and exploit tourism potential.

Katherine Muller Marin, Chief Representative of UNESCO Office in Hanoi, commented: 'Dong Van stone plateau along with other images such as Ha Long Bay will contribute to promoting the image of Vietnam, opening up opportunities to transform stone into the main source of income for people '.
