Drinking lemon juice daily helps prevent kidney stones
A simple and inexpensive method to prevent kidney stones is to drink lemon juice daily.
According to Roger Sur, an expert at UC San Diego Research Center for Kidney Stones Prevention, the use of lemon is one of five effective measures to prevent kidney stones.
In addition, drinking plenty of lemon juice also helps reduce absorption of salt, calcium and protein into the body through the gastrointestinal tract. Lemons contain a lot of citrate (the natural compound that blocks the formation of kidney stones) in most fruits.
Mr. Sur's study showed that drinking about 140g of lemon juice daily with water mixed into two liters of water could reduce the risk of kidney stones by 7-8 times.
Other fruit juices contain less citrate and often contain a certain amount of calcium and oxalate, one of the basic components of kidney stones.
