The team led by Dr. Zumin Shi of the University of Adelaide (Australia) conducted a survey of 16,907 people aged 16 and older in the state of South Australia between March 2008 and June 2010. These people are asked to answer questions regarding drinking carbonated beverages.

The results showed that one in 10 adults will drink more than half a liter of carbonated soft drinks a day in South Australia.

According to the survey, experts found that the absorption of soft drinks was associated with an increased risk of asthma or COPD. The more you drink, the higher your risk.

In total, 13.3% of respondents have asthma and 15.6% of COPD sufferers say they drink more than half a liter of carbonated soft drinks daily.

'Our research highlights the importance of healthy eating to prevent chronic diseases such as asthma and COPD,' Dr. Zumin said.

The results of the above study have been published on the Respirology.
