El Hierro Island 'transformed'
The island of El Hierro of Spain has been reported to have started moving eastward and part of it has risen by 11cm, which is the result of recent seismic activities.
El Hierro island
Located on the west side of the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa, El Hierro has just suffered a fairly strong earthquake since the eruption of an underground volcano near this coast in 2011. Information cited from the National Volcanic Center (INVOLCAN).
The strong earthquake of 4.7 Richter scale off the island has a population of only about 10,000 people making the island shift slightly to the east as a result of magmatic pressure under the earth's crust. This earthquake took place on March 18, 2013 and followed by 54 waves.
INVOLCAN also announced that seismic activities also made the area of Punta de Orchilla at the end of the island rise 11cm.
According to Chinaview, the island of El Hierro is believed by many to be caused by volcanic eruptions over 100 million years ago.
