El Nino makes winter 2009 warmer

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, due to the impact of El Nino, this year Vietnam will have a relatively warm winter, accompanied by a drought phenomenon in the future.

Mr. Bui Minh Tang, Director of the Central Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, said that in the winter, there will still be cold but less and not lasting cold spells, there may be warm sunshine seasons left and dry. on a large scale, especially in the Northern, Central Highlands and Southern regions.

In addition, active El Nino is also one of the causes of intense storms when approaching the shore and can suddenly increase.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 20 storms affecting the East Sea in the Pacific region, of which 10 have affected Vietnam. The number of storms is on average compared to every year, but the number of "super storms" (strong level 14 and above) increases suddenly.

On average, there are 5-6 strong storms each year, but this year, up to October, 10 storms are considered "super typhoons", including 4-5 strong ones up to level 17. Number storms with complex operations, tricky paths, sudden changes in intensity also increase. It can be mentioned that the storm No. 4 moves very fast, the storm No. 9 is strong, the storm No. 6 goes through Hai Nam Island and the storm No. 10 knots the figure 8 and three times landed on Luzon Island (Philippines).

El Nino is characterized by a high temperature base, weak cold air, making the sea water warmer than average. This year, although it has been in the winter, Vietnam now has a clear cold air. This is also a basis for forecasting that Vietnam will still have strong storms and unusual developments from now to the end of the year, the Central Coast region will continue to have heavy rain on a large scale.
