Error handling when installing Internet Explorer 7

  4. In the Find what box, enter IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable .
  5. Under Direction , click Up and then click Find Next .

    If you find the " Key is still unwriteable " section, this indicates that there is a problem that is preventing the registry from being updated. For example, the text similar to the following in the log file will indicate that this is a problem:

time_stamp: IECUSTOM: Key is still unwriteable registry_subkey

In this example, registry_subkey is the name of a registry subkey that causes the problem.

If you do not find the " Key is still unwriteable " section in the ie7.log file, go to step 2.

2. Reset the registry permissions for sub-keys that have incorrect permissions. To update the permissions of the registry subkey, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run , type regedit and then click OK
  2. Locate then right-click each sub-key that you found in step 1, then select Permissions in the Edit menu.

    Note : the ie7.log file contains the following abbreviations:
    1. HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    2. HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    3. HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER
  3. Under Group or user names , click Administrators .
  4. Under Permissions for Administrators section make sure that the Allow box is selected for each of the following items:
    1. Full Control
    2. Read
  5. Make sure that Deny box is not selected for any users or groups.
  6. Click Apply and then click OK
  7. On the File menu, click Edit
  8. Try reinstalling Internet Explorer 7 again. You may have to repeat the steps above if other keys appear to prevent Internet Explorer 7 installation.

Method 3 : Check for files that cannot be backed up or updated

1. This is a problem determining the blocking of files from backup or update. To do this we do the following:

  1. Click Start, click Run , enter % windir% ie7.log and then click OK to open the ie7.log file

Time_stamp: DoInstallation: UpdSpCommitFileQueue for AlwaysQueue Failed: 0x4c7

If you can't find the " ArchiveFileForUninstall: ArchiveSingleFile Canceled " paragraph in the ie7.log file.

2. Reset the permissions for the Vgx.dll file. To set the file's permissions by default, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run , enter one of the following statements, and then click OK :
    1. If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, enter the following command:
