Even drinking Vitamin C doubles the risk of kidney stones
New research shows that taking a daily supplement of vitamin C can double the risk of kidney stones in men.
"High-dose vitamin C has long been suspected to increase the risk of kidney stones ," said Laura Thomas, Swedish researcher Karolínka, head of the study.
Vitamin C from fruits and vegetables is a part
Indispensable in healthy diet.
The reason is that after absorption, the body excretes vitamin C in the form of oxalate in the urine and kidney stones are small crystals, which can be formed when calcium meets oxalate, the information is published in the above Medical report. JAMA magazine.
The study monitored more than 22,000 middle-aged and elderly people in 11 years, of which 907 men regularly took vitamin supplements and about 22,000 people did not use vitamins. Each vitamin tablet usually contains 1000 milligrams of C.
In the study, 3.4% of men taking vitamin C supplements daily had kidney stones twice as much as 1.8% in those who did not drink.
However, researchers still encourage people to take vitamin C through fruits and vegetables, because this is an important antioxidant for bone, muscle, and scurvy.
"Vitamin C is an important part of a healthy diet, the effects of vitamin C on kidney stones depend on the dose and the combination with other nutrients," Thomas said.
