Excavating headless mummies in Peru

Peruvian archaeologists have discovered a mummy of a high-ranking official in the Huari tribe, who lived about 1,300 years ago. It is the oldest mummy ever found in Peru's capital Lima.

The mummified and lost mummy is located in the tomb of Huaca Pucllana in Lima.

Museum director Huaca Pucllana, archaeologist Isabel Flores, said the Huari people were before the Incas - civilization dominated South America from Colombia to Chile, until the Spanish invaded in the 1530s.

" Based on men's clothing, it can be determined that this is a high-ranking official wrapped in fabric and rope made of plant fibers ," Flores said.

The Huari are a warrior tribe that once ruled the central Andes of Peru and coastal areas around 600 and 1000 AD. They are known for their high quality fabrics and diverse ceramic patterns. Later the Ichmas rebelled to overthrow Huari society. The beheading of General Huari was to erase all traces of a race that had once occupied them for years.

" It's an act of rebellion against the Huari. This discovery gives us valuable information about ancient life in what is the capital of Peru today ," Flores said.

The mummy is surrounded by clothes and food like corn and beans. The dry skin and bones were crumbled, most ligaments were exposed.
