Excavation in Laos discovered many bronze Buddha statues

According to the Lao Heritage Department, all statues and artifacts found during excavations in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province will be examined.

According to a reporter in Laos, recently the Bokeo Provincial Government (Northern Laos) and relevant Lao parties have excavated more than 100 large and small Buddha statues and many Buddha heads of different shapes in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province. .

On his personal Facebook page, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of Laos Phosy Keomanivong said most of the found figurines seemed to be in intact condition.

As of March 21, a total of 101 statues and 18 Buddha heads and many other parts were discovered.

According to the Lao Heritage Department, all statues and artifacts found during this excavation will be examined.

The age and origin of the statues have not yet been specifically determined, but most are made of bronze, some are engraved and were brought to Thongthip Phatthanaram Pagoda in Yaitonpheung village, Tonpheung district for preservation.

Mr. Souliphane Boualaphane, an official of the Lao Heritage Department, said that the place where the Buddha statues were discovered this time was an area with relatively low terrain due to its proximity to the river. Over time, the small statues were covered with sand. covered and buried.

The archaeological remains in this area mostly date back to the period of the Lane Xang Kingdom , although the site was first established centuries ago, more than 1,600 years ago.

The area includes about 40 different sites with temples, stupas and statues scattered around the area.

The excavation of Buddha statues here took place on March 11, when workers repairing the road near Thongthip Pagoda discovered the head of a Buddha statue and a number of other small headless statues.

Excavation work is still being conducted by Lao authorities.
