As Valentine's Day is approaching, many singles begin to feel a little sorry for themselves. On the day for couples, they are more likely to face a feeling of isolation and loneliness. However, according to a new study, this may be good for them.

Writing in Cognition & Emotion, researchers from the University of Chicago (USA) said that in the context of everyday life, loneliness is often considered a disaster for human existence. However, studies over the past decade have given a very different perspective on loneliness.

Researchers found that, apart from personal experience, loneliness also acts as an adaptation in certain living conditions.

"Although one may feel loneliness does not have liberation characteristics, it encourages behavioral change to increase one's survival. The pain of loneliness is created. motivating people to innovate the necessary connections to ensure survival as well as promoting social responsibility, cohesion and collective action , ' explains researcher John Cacioppoat.

However, the feeling of loneliness is not always good. Researchers discovered that lonely people are perceived more negatively in terms of psychosocial functions and the level of attractiveness. Specifically, in a social environment, non-loners form a negative impression on lonely people. This then affects their behavior, reinforcing the feeling of isolation in lonely individuals.

Moreover, people often judge lonely opposite partners as less friendly than others.

The American team even found that loneliness could be the reason many sports fans decided to support their "guts" . According to them, by joining the crowd of supporters, an individual can avoid feeling lost or isolated.
