According to the Daily Mail, the analysis of artifacts found in the area shows that the tomb dates from 300 to 350 AD, about 1,700 years ago.

In the tomb there is a beautiful jewel-shaped mask - artifacts that help identify this as a grave of a member of the royal lineage. This made it the oldest royal tomb found in Petén in northwest Guatemala.

Previous studies at this site found six royal tombs and sacrificial tombs from the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries AD.

This discovery is the result of Guatemalan archaeologists from the El Perú-Waka Archaeological Project 'in partnership with the United States.
