AFP quoted a Nepalese government spokesman as saying the treasure, dated to about 500 years - was hidden under a warehouse in Hanuman Dhoka palace. It was discovered when workers repaired the palace.

"The treasure consists of coins and decorations, seems to be divine sacrifices ," said government spokesman Jalkrishna Shrestha today.

It is not clear how much the treasure is worth, but the Shrestha says it weighs about 300 kg. " We think there will be more treasures like that when the restoration process continues ," he said.

This royal palace restoration project costs about 65,000 USD. It began two months ago and lasts until September. The palace dates from the 16th century and is a cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The Royal Nepalese lived in this palace since the late 19th century.

The last emperor of Nepal was Gyanendra removed from the palace in 2008 when deposed. He was crowned in 2001.
