Forcing children to do too many homework: Loi is not good

A large survey found the negative impact of making students do too much homework. This survey was carried out by researchers from Stanford University, USA with more than 4,000 students in high schools in California, USA.

"Our research on the impact of homework is challenging the traditional thinking that homework is only good for you," Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at Stanford and is The co-author of the study is published in the educational journal Journal of Experimental Education.

Researchers have used survey data to test homework awareness, students' happy and relaxed spirit and enthusiastic behavior to participate in student activities. In addition to survey data, Pope and colleagues used open-ended questions to explore students' views on homework.

Students participating in the survey must spend an average of 3.1 hours doing homework each night. Researchers have found that having to do too much homework can reduce efficiency and even backfire. They also cited previous studies saying that doing homework only works well when they only have to do homework for 2 hours every night, and the time range from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours The view is optimal for high school students.

"Busy homework makes students frustrated with their studies, and just does simple homework to finish and get points , " Pope said. She said the study also looked at the quality of homework. Accordingly, homework is not simply "a routine that needs to be done" , but instead, any homework should have a clear purpose and benefit, they must be drafting, lesson planning, stimulating students to learn and develop their knowledge and skills.

In addition, their research also found that having to do homework too much would cause the following negative effects:

- Harmful health: In open questions, many students say that the burden of homework causes insomnia and other health problems. Researchers have asked students if they have health problems such as headaches, fatigue, insomnia, weight loss and stomach pain?

- Less time for friends, family and extra-curricular activities: Both survey data and student responses show that spending too much time on homework means they "don't respond" meet the development needs or other important social skills ". Having to do homework, they are forced to miss other activities, not meeting friends or family and missing the opportunity to pursue the interests they desire.
