Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins in the Mekong River are threatened

A recent study by James Cook Australaia University and Can Tho University has identified: freshwater dolphins almost disappeared from the Mekong basin in Vietnam.

However, occasional odd dolphins may migrate from Cambodia to the sections of the Tien and Hau rivers of Vietnam, bordering Cambodia.

The Mekong River dolphin is a special mammal, currently only about 150 animals and the mortality rate is quite high, about 18 fish / year. They live mainly within about 190 km of the Mekong River from Kratie to the Cambodia-Laos border.

Some records show that the dolphins are particularly deep in the mouth of the Hau River, but have not been identified as Mekong dolphins or saltwater dolphins (according to the estuaries moving deep into the Hau River). .

The research team collected and made suggestions: the conservation of freshwater dolphins (if present) in the Mekong basin is considered necessary by the local community, especially in the social sense. beliefs and create opportunities for future generations to see this particular species.
