Gastrectomy - A solution for obese people with diabetes

US scientists have published a study that showed that surgery to remove part of the stomach or cut gastric flap is the most effective solution for obese patients with type 2 diabetes.

In the March 31 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the team said that gastric surgery helped patients better control their blood sugar levels than taking drugs or applying drugs. Diet weight loss as directed by your doctor.

This is the conclusion drawn after Cleveland Clinic Lerner scientists conducted a survey of 150 patients over three years. Of these, some people were prescribed gastric surgery, the rest were given medication and treated according to the instructions of physiotherapists.

After three years, the results showed that only 5% of patients in the medication group had a 3-month average glycemic index of less than 6%, lower than the 7% standard given by the American Diabetes Association.

Meanwhile, in the group of patients with gastric surgery, this rate is up to 37.5% in the gastric section and 24.5% in the group of gastric flap. Not only that, the weight of surgical patients also decreased by 25% and 21%, much higher than the 4% weight loss rate in the non-surgical group.

Based on the above results, the head of Sangeeta Kashyap research group said that doctors might consider putting this surgery into treatment for obese patients with type 2 diabetes.
