Ghost disk from one computer to another

Picture 1 of Ghost disk from one computer to another Ghost, also known as 'clone' tool, or disk backup. This program is a fee-based software from Symantec, you can contact the software store to buy. You can also use the short version included in Hiren's boot toolkit.

Need to prepare, a boot CD Hiren, version 7.0 or higher, the latest version is now 8.2. The Norton Ghost tool is available in this CD. Computer 1 (fully installed) must have a CD ROM drive.

There are two ways to perform Ghost jobs from machine one to machine two.

Method 1 : (If you are knowledgeable about disassembling computer hardware, and your device is not a machine that is under warranty) You follow these steps sequentially:

B1 : Remove the hard drive of machine 2, attach it to computer 1 in slave mode (if your device uses IDE ATA hard disk). If your computer uses SATA then attach a second SATA potrt.

B2 : After attaching the hard disk, you enter the BIOS and check if the detected computer has two hard drives. If not, check and manipulate until your computer recognizes two hard drives.

B3 : there are 3 cases

1. If the two hard drives are the same size, you can start Ghost disk now. Do the following:

Start the machine with the prepared CDROM Hiren disc. You will get a list of many tools on this CD. Press the number of the 'Disk Clone Tools' tool line, you will see a list of lots of tools to copy disks, choose Norton Ghost tool 8.00.

Select Local -> Disk -> To Disk sequence. When the computer asks you about Source Disk, select the drive with the full information. The target disk will be the hard disk that you just inserted.

Please note, the information on the target disk will be overwritten if you use Disk to Disk mode. If you Ghost the hard disk installed the operating system under the NT family (Windows 2000 / XP / 2003), you remember to accept to Ghost even the Pagefile.sys file. This function is only available for Ghost versions from 8.00 up. Windows 2003 needs Ghost version 8.02.

2. If your two drives are not the same or the same, but you want to split another partition structure.

First of all, use PartionMagic to repartition your 2 hard disk as you like. PartionMagic tool can be found on Hiren CD, at Disk Manager Tools.

You proceed to Ghost from Partion -> Partion. The program asks you to select the source disk, go to the source partition (Source Partion), and then to the destination disk, if there are two physical hard disks and partitions containing the information to be copied.

If not, you can also copy a partition into an Images file, using the Pation -> To Image function. This file has a extension called .gho. Remember to confirm that the request to copy the Pagefile.sys file to the image file is included. After that, need to copy to any partition, then use Partion function -> From Images . to extract from the .gho file that you have created a Partion with almost intact information.

Note : The amount of information in the source partition must not be greater than the capacity of the target partition. Preferably, the two partitions should be evenly sized or the source partition is smaller in size.

Method 2 : (If you do not want to remove the computer).

Read carefully step three, instructing how Ghost a disk partition into an Images file. Find a way to copy the disk partition file. So from machine 1 to machine 2. Then, start device 2 with Hiren CD and do the opposite, ghost from an Images file into a disk partition. This .gho file is usually quite large in size, usually larger than 1GB. You can burn to CD or better than DVD. If better, there's a removable device like a removable hard drive .

For safety, when removing hard disk 2 back to computer 2, start Windows in SafeMode mode, use the Scan for Hardware Change function in Device Manager before restarting in normal mode. Maybe, Windows will reinstall some of the hardware drivers, so be careful to prepare the Windows installation CD. This is used to reset the Windows XP ID (identifier) for your new computer (computer 2).

Remember, backup information must always be backed up and be careful in distinguishing the hard disk, especially in the case of two identical hard disks.

Good luck!
