Glaciers help to limit global warming
The world is facing an increasing threat from global warming. However, according to a Chinese scientist, 20 million km 2 of glaciers will help curb the rapid rise in global temperature.
(Photo: TTO) Zhang Wenjing, a leading Chinese expert on glaciology, said glaciers, often seen as an important source of clean water on Earth, also help "regulate" global temperatures.
Zhang was a scientist who participated in a month-long expedition on the Himalayan north and south slopes with Chinese, Indian, Nepalese and Bhutanese scientists. The mission of the team is to study the impact of global warming on Himalayan glaciers - the region with the second largest number of glaciers in the world after the North Pole.
According to him, the heat absorbed during the melting of glaciers can neutralize global warming.'In other words, the world's 20 million square kilometers of glaciers and many large ocean regions will not let global temperatures rise too fast , ' Zhang said.
Zhang said that Himalayan glaciers are an important source of water to help maintain the region's ecosystem.'The narrowing of glaciers will have a serious impact on the ecological, economic and social environment in the region,' he warned.
