'Golden snow' covers many cities in China

A sharp drop in temperature and a massive sandstorm were the cause of the 'golden snow' phenomenon in Xinjiang, China.

The video recorded in the cities of Urumqi, Shijiazhuang and Changji showed 10-20cm of golden snow covering the streets of Xinjiang Autonomous Region over the weekend.

"From December 30, many places in Xinjiang are affected by strong winds and sandstorms in the Karamay area. Strong winds carry sand to the south and into cities.

Due to the low temperature, the dust falls with the snow. In the early stages, snow is mainly but then mostly dust, " said He Qing, director of Xinjiang Meteorological Agency.

The recent sandstorm also caused cities in northwestern China to become seriously polluted. Vision in the area was reduced to below 100m on December 2 when huge sand walls were erected.

Police came to areas affected by this phenomenon to ensure safety along the highways.
