The research team at the University of Hong Kong (China) found that capsaicinoids in chili peppers reduce blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels - factors that can lead to cardiovascular disease.
Micronutrients in chili help lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
Scientists conducted research with two groups of hamsters. Both groups of mice were fed high-cholesterol foods. Then, they fed a group of capsaicinoids, while the other group was fed non-capsaicinoids.
Analyzing the data collected, the scientists discovered capsaicinoids reduce the accumulation of cholesterol in the blood, enhance destruction and reverse the release of this substance from the body.
In addition, capsaicinoids also neutralize the activity of a gene - limiting blood from arteries to the heart and other organs - to help the blood circulate in the body better.
'This study helps us better understand how the microbes in chili affect how to improve cardiovascular health , ' said Dr. Zhen-Yu Chen, head of research, on the Daily Mail.
Despite this, the scientists recommend chili not to replace pharmaceuticals. Therefore, people should not eat too much chili, even though this is a very attractive spice during a meal.
